Minnesota Canoe Association
The Minnesota Canoe Association (MCA) was founded in 1966 to promote the
principle that "canoeing should be shared with anyone who loves the water and
quiet serenity of the outdoors." The Association was formed by Eugene Jensen,
Betty and Karl Ketter, and others to support the above principle and promote
canoe racing and the art of canoe building and design.
Since its beginning over 30 years ago, the MCA has grown to over 1,100 members
with 11 chapters providing for special interests and local participation. The
MCA sponsors or promotes a number of events during the year, including the
Paddlesport Show and Annual Meeting in February, the Pike Island clean-up and
Canoe U in May, the Lake Pepin Messabout in June, a July 4th Canoe Race, a
membership picnic in August, the Fall Color Cruise in October, and the Far North
Symposium in November. In addition to these major events, the MCA and its
various Chapters sponsor and promote safety and skills enhancement classes,
cruises, races, building workshops and clinics.
Over the years, members of the MCA have created a variety of canoe designs. The
MCA offers plans for a number of different woodstrip canoes and kayaks, and a
Builder's Book, with step-by-step instructions, to build your own. Reduced cost
building supplies and winter canoe construction projects and classes are
available to members.
The MCA publishes HUT!, a high quality monthly magazine with news and articles
on canoeing and kayaking, as well as a calendar of upcoming events. HUT! serves
